All electrical contractors are required to be licensed by the City of Ithaca to perform electrical work within the City of Ithaca. Applications for periodic licensing examinations can be obtained in the Building Department. The City of Ithaca Examining Board of Electricians has chosen Thursday, December 13, 2018 as the date for the 2018 Electrical Licensing Examination. The exam will be given at 8:00 am in Council Chambers located on the 3rd floor of City Hall, 108 E. Green Street, Ithaca, NY and will be on the 2014 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) including photovoltaic systems.
Those electricians who can prove a minimum of 42 months experience are welcome to apply to take the exam. There is an application fee of $100 which will be applied to the annual license fee for those who pass the test. Deadline for applications is Friday, November 16, 2018.
Out-of-town electricians who are not licensed by the City of Ithaca and are licensed by another municipality will require a special reciprocal license to perform any work within the City of Ithaca. Each electrical contract undertaken by such a person or company will require a separate reciprocal license renewal.
Contractor licensing is required for the installation and maintenance of security and/or fire alarm systems. Contractors are required to hold a current New York State Security or Fire Alarm Systems Installer license to perform work within the City of Ithaca.
All heating and/or ventilation engineer, contractor or installer are required to obtain a certificate of registration to perform work within the City of Ithaca. Registrations are renewed yearly and applications can be obtained in the Building Department.
