Find your shovels - sidewalks must be cleared!

Ready or not, the snow is here! Property owners are required to clear the full width of sidewalks and corner curb-cuts from snow and ice within 24 hours of the beginning of a snowfall. Sidewalks that are not cleared may be cleared by city crews and the property owners could be ticketed and billed for services. Fire hydrants should be kept clear as well so firefighters will have quick access to them if needed.

If you would like to volunteer to help others this winter that are unable or cannot afford to do their own snow removal, or if you can help, but wish to be paid for snow removal, please call the Tompkins County Office for the Aging at (607) 274-5482, or Lifelong at (607) 273-1511.

Adhering to the odd/even parking regulations facilitates the city’s efforts in clearing streets of snow. If you will be leaving town during the winter season, please make arrangements to have your vehicle moved regularly or investigate off-street parking options. Vehicles that are not moved pursuant to the parking regulations may be ticketed or towed at the owner’s expense.

Our annual winter reminder: certain streets have been designated as emergency snow routes. You can identify them by the red and white street signs. During a snowstorm these routes might be activated by a declaration of the Mayor. If activated, it is unlawful to park a vehicle on these designated streets until the declaration is canceled.

Questions about any of these regulations can be forwarded to the Streets & Facilities Division at (607) 272-1718.
