Hector Street Complete Streets Project Road Re-Opening

The City of Ithaca is pleased to announce that Hector Street will be re-opened to thru traffic on Friday, July 31st at 12:00 p.m.

A short, socially distanced ribbon-cutting ceremony will occur at 9AM on 31 July 2020 at the intersection of Warren Place and Hector Street. Those attending should please park within the snowplow turn-around or along Warren Place.

Thanks to the hard work of the City’s Streets crew, the Water & Sewer crew, the City Forester, the City Engineer’s office, and the City’s contractor, Bothar Construction LLC of Binghamton, NY, the Hector Street Complete Streets project has come to substantial completion.  Bothar Construction installed new and replacement sidewalks along Hector Street between Floral Avenue and 500 feet west of Warren Place, connecting beyond the City line to Linderman Creek Apartments. This extension into the Town of Ithaca was done in partnership with the Town of Ithaca, who helped fund a portion of these improvement. Bothar also  installed associated retaining walls, curbing, and drainage improvements.. In addition to the sidewalk work, City Department of Public Works crews have constructed improvements to the water main, curbing, and stormwater infrastructure within the corridor.

The road closure and detour that has been in effect since April 1 will be removed on Friday, July 31st, a day ahead of schedule.  People driving, walking, or biking through the Hector Street corridor should use caution as they adjust to the new conditions and obey new street signs and crosswalks. Those driving in the downhill lane will need to share the lane with bicycle traffic. An uphill separated bicycle lane had been provided for the length of the corridor. The City continues to encourage commuters to rideshare and take public transport whenever possible.

Note: Additional tree plantings and other related construction activity will occur in late September, using construction flagging operations for the work zone.
