City of Ithaca DPW Starts the Night Shift for Clearing Leaves and Snow

DPW Night Leaf Clearing

City of Ithaca DPW Starts the Night Shift for Clearing Leaves and Snow

The changeover from fall to winter is beginning in the City of Ithaca. The Department of Public Works Streets & Facilities division will institute its night shift for the late fall and winter months beginning Sunday November 12th. Crews will be tasked with plowing roads during the early morning hours in the event of a snowfall or icy conditions. When the snow misses Ithaca, this overnight staffing is essential to clearing the roads of the fall foliage and is a complimentary use of resources. This use of resources in removing leaves from the roadway is crucial to maintaining the stormwater system, leaves in the roadway are one of the biggest causes of localized flooding in the City of Ithaca.

The city crews will only be clearing the leaves that have fallen into the roadway from the existing tree canopy. Residents are reminded not to rake leaves into the roadway and that yard waste pick up occurs on a regular basis from April thru December every other week opposite recycling week. This can be achieved through the use of brown bags with yard waste tags that are placed at the curb.

The City DPW Streets & Facilities would like to thank the community for the support in this endeavor and apologize in advance for the nightly disruption experienced when crews are street sweeping the leaves and plowing the snow.
